XV. THE ENTRANCE TO THE FOREST II  16" x 12"   1975
XV. The horse symbolises instinct; the man, intellect; the woman, intuition; the dove, inspiration; the forest, the mind. The man leads the horse and the woman into the forest. This does not bode well, for one cannot hope to discern the truth guided by intellect alone. The dove is soon lost. To enter the forest in such a manner is to court confusion (XVI) and, in all likelihood, a fall (XVII). The fall in question is a fall from grace. The instinct for the Quest is itself a gift of grace, so the horse may be seen to symbolise, not only instinct, but grace too. It is that which carries the man and woman on their journey. They would do well - especially in the early stages - to give the horse its head.
